Final Reflection on Learning

Austen and I were already planning to take this module since last semester to prepare ourselves for the workforce and I am really glad that we have chosen the right class to have Brad as our tutor. I really enjoyed every single lesson of this module that each lesson always left me feeling sprightlier after class, which none of the other modules I took was capable of.

One very great improvement that I had gained from this module is to eradicate the heavy usage of fillers during my presentations. Through effective peer evaluation and constant hands-on activities that we had in class, ES2007s helped me realised this flaw of mine which I never knew of before taking this module. Upon receiving feedback from class, I did some self-reflections and eventually managed to find out the root cause of my usage of fillers. With this realization, my final oral presentation had shown great improvement from peer teaching, with respect to the use of fillers.

After taking this module, I am now more aware and confident of how to present myself effectively to engage my audience. I wish this module did not need to come to an end, because it was just so enriching, interactive and it had a very comfortable setting for effective learning.

Lastly, it is really amazing that my classmates and I have fostered great friendships through the course of this module. In fact, as I am writing this post, I am sitting with some of my ES classmates around the study desk. Again, none of the modules that I had taken in these four years had managed to establish such great friendships.

Thank you, Brad, for such an awesome learning and bonding experience.

  1. Hello Jieying!

I agree that your usage of pause fillers has greatly been reduced by the last Oral presentation. Although the module has ended, we can still improve our communication skills with conscious effort!

Finally Good Job for the project and presentation!

    1. Hi Austen! Thank you for your compliment! I think you really did awesome at your final oral presentation. I always knew you to be a good presenter but that particular presentation was a bit different. It felt like you had full control of the stage and you were charming everyone off with your suit and aura! :) Continue working hard! I am sure you will do so fine at your workplace in future!

  6. Hi jieying,

Your positivity and friendliness has brought much joy to the class since day one! In fact, I find that the comments and feedback you gave me after my OP has been especially encouraging.

Anyway, I think it is great that you discovered your issues with pause-fillers and fixed them early. With the practice and confidence you gained from this course, I hope you go on to ace your fyp and any subsequent challenges!

    Cheers,
    Weizhe

    1. Hello Weizhe! Thank you for your well wishing and I will definitely apply what I learnt from ES2007s for this Friday's important presentation.

It's really nice to know that my feedback has encouraged you! :D In addition, I know you have a great interest in public speaking, so I wish you all the best in going far in this aspect! You have done really well at your final oral presentation!

  7. Thank you, Jie Ying, for this brief heart-felt reflection and for the various accolades. I like the way you focus on two key aspects of your course learning: a greater awareness of fillers in speaking and the interpersonal, social element. I'm selfish, I admit: It's so satisfying for me to observe students when they really figure a problem out, when they identify some "monkey on the back" and then take that thing by the legs and throw it off. You did just that with the fillers.

Great projection. Great eye contact. Great content control. And now....I'm confident that you will never present again without an awareness of how much better you sound without the unnecessary verbal blips.

    Great articulation is yours!

Hey, I'm envious though that you all are hanging out and (no doubt) having lunch without me! It was my great pleasure this term to have a chance to interact with you all during our late lunch.

For now, all the best for your upcoming talks, and for the road ahead!
